Partisan...I must admit I, too, am a card carrying member of the Janitorial Party. Our mission is to persecute innocent people for no reason whatsoever. Who's next?

It's an eight to nine hour drive from Arkham Central to San Diego. Could be he's still in SoCal, I suppose.

Citrus Heights, right?

Well, this guy is unbalanced, that's obvious from his post blasting Bill. Bill, I hope you don't take the bait and try to defend yourself on that topic. I think it isn't necessary. Please let me jump in an defend Bill.

I have had a couple of short PMs with Randal. He wants to talk to me on the phone. I'm both dreading and looking forward to that conversation. I don't want to get sucked into his world - I have more than my share of my own problems.

Unless I'm completely wrong, I don't see how anyone can make a living selling DIY boards and kits, so I feel OK for people to run little projects like this here on electro-music.com. Still, I think fonik is correct, we need some written guidelines so people who run projects and their "customers" have fewer misunderstandings.

Fonik, if you would be willing, please start a new topic in this sub-forum with a draft of this based on what you already posted. Then the memebers of this group can provide feedback, suggestions, corrections, etc. When it is ready, we can move it to the main DIY forum.

Actually, I wouldn't mind businesses to use electro-music.com for forums. We've offered that to many synth makers. Cwejman is a good example. If we can help these small manufacturers, it's a good way to improve the situation for the music and the community. Of course, there are limits. I wouldn't want Cwejman bad mouthing someone like Buchla, or anyone else for that matter,

Citrus Heights is near Sacramento. My brother-in-law lives near there. It could be an 8 hour drive or a little more to San Diego from there.

Thanks, Howard. All the other stuff he posted was easy to let pass, but his attack on Bill was the hard one to refrain from.

Good luck with that, sincerely.

My wife just sent you a couple'o'boxes of more problems, not the least of which will be just the task of opening them - she taped those suckers together tight.

Unless he hopped a plane, that was one short, intense visit sandwiched in between two very long drives.

Good post Howard (on QFG thread) Very Happy It was almost getting as hot as those fires Shocked , which incidentally I hope no one here on electro-music has been harmed by the devistation?

I think the PM has been one of Randal's biggest regrets. All of this happened, or started because of his insistence on using the PM rather than just asking or discussing this on list and in public, and of course that has made it worse- because it's a bit like 'whispering' I think.

But you don´t have to talk to him! Why? You are in charge here, and not him. You take control and tell him no. If he asks why you simple say that you don´t see the point. If he then insists on whatever it is you repeat that you don´t see the problem and the urgency. Protect yourself from this guy. I once called him an energy vampire and that is what he is.

His behaviour is sligthly skewed. For some reason that is all it takes to bring threads like this into multipage monsters. Randal is of little importance if he is contained. Containment is good for him and good for us. We should not spend more time on this guy. He delivers his PCBs and that´s it.

Quite right. It's obvious (to me) why he's going to you Howard, because if you give in to him, not one constructor here will be able to reproduce their efforts without the niggling in the back of their minds that someone out there will just be able to walk off with their designs and reproduce them without permission etc etc. Randal, IMO, is like a spoilt little schoolboy who can't get his way. Don't phone him. Just be polite and assertive. (via PM of course- or even better on list, as this sends the message to everyone else). electro-music is a great place, lets not let one little **** spoil everyone else's fun.

Hmm. This guy probably is one of those people that would be a regular on "Coast to Coast AM", but kinda interesting.

http://www.drbrucegoldberg.com/EnergyVampires.htm

Quote:
The Insecure Type

The main issue with insecure types is nurturance. These souls have been through many incarnations during which there simply was not enough food or love to go around. They usually were abandoned at some time in their present life, and fear it will happen again.

The insecure type feels that everyone around them is draining their energy; their response is to suck the energy from others to compensate. They may engage you in long, boring conversations and speak very softly. Their voice is so soft and low that you have to strain to hear them. These are compulsive people who are classically overweight and prove to addictions of all kinds.

These souls continually create life experience proving that they are not worthy of attention, and their energy needs and nurturing requirements will never be satisfied. To solve this deficiency, they must persist in draining the energy from others, creating a vicious cycle.

An insecure type always comes across as helpless. They insist you do things for them, and expect you to take care of their every need. Give-and-take circumstances are unknown to them. All they can do is take.

Never stand directly in front of this person. Do not make eye contact with him or her, if possible. Encourage them with words, but do not offer to do things for them. Remember these individuals live in constant fear of rejection and abandonment. Do not let your pity for them be a basis for you being their next victim.

Thanks for your concern, guys. I can handle myself on the phone. I'm not going to give in - I don't even know what that would be.

Someone correct me, AFAIK, he has TH's permission to make these boards. Other than personality disorders and slandering Bill, his main transgression is being late on delivery, and not communicating.

Before he attempted to maul Bill (and I can't think too many people could have taken that seriously, even taking into account Randal's re-manufactured persona), the only real trangression for me was the lack of communication. I fully expect people to run into difficulties and delays, it's part and parcel of the whole thing. If I know what's going on, even if I've paid money, I don't worry about it. I paid up front for a group buy of AD parts from some guys on Synth DIY. It was a year before I had those parts in my hands. Didn't bother me in the slightest, because they always kept us abreast as a group of the difficulties they were having with AD. If anything, it made me grateful they were going to such trouble to make the parts available.

If they would have approached it like Randal did, six months would have had me beating down their door. I don't want to have to go to them to ask about status - that's a sure sign something's not right. How do I know they're telling me one thing, and half a dozen guys something else?

Speaking as someone who took a year + to get Mankato PCBs and TH books out the door, I have some sympathy for Randal. I think his only real offense here is taking money before he had actual product to ship. THAT I think is something we should be very wary of, and attempt to discourage whenever possible.

Nothing to do with anything, but according to the DIY / analog presets thread, Randall is planning on having "several products" at the Winter NAMM show... In the words of Alice "curiouser and curiouser."

I unfortunately have never made it to a NAMM. Are there many DIY synth people there? Isn't it a show for music retailers?

I can't imagine a DIY kit for a phase shifter or something next to a Gibson Les Paul.

Yes. I think several is an understatement though, according to the list he presented to me way back.

Well, it's one thing to make a big list of potential products. Heck, I'VE got that! It's a whole 'nuther thing to actually have the things sitting at a trade show, and even MORE nuttines to produce them in a reasonable quantity. Time will tell. If he can pull it off, more power to him - but I'm not holding my breath.

And of course, many of us know that prototype products always function flawlessly until taken to a trade show and put on display (been there, done that). Wink
