Just a quick note to let you all know that I powered up my Klee today, and like the other three prototypers, it worked straight off the bat. That's 4 out of 4, which for a project of this complexity proves it to be a straight forward build, tolerant of variation, and not easily messed up. We have all completed complex projects before, but I have to say I am very impressed. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there.

The father of the Klee boards welcomes his blinking baby Klee into the world . That's five in existence that I know of. Hooray!!
The boards were ordered two weeks ago next Thursday. Shipping was ten business days, so they should appear at the end of this week or beginning of the next. Bill and I are going to do a final QA build on them to make sure everything is copasetic, then we'll proceed from there. We're just going to stuff the boards and interface them with our existing panels, so it won't be a long process.
The Build Doc is nearing final completion - it's been about three weeks of solid work. It took precedence over the ops manual, seeing as how you have to build the thing before you can operate it.

Great Scott !!! I am ready when you are man. I will have more parts soon for the final QA build. Sure, I will just chuck the boards into my existing panel now that I have all the connectors labeled
Well, eventually, I will have two dueling Klee's !!!!

are these boards still for sale?
is it too late to get these boards?? also, are the kits still for sale and do any of the kits include panels?
thanks..
looking at the pdf, this doesnt look AS hard as I had thought, maybe I can handle it. (everything i have ever built has been done on a strip or a perfboard so my reasoning is, no matter how many parts this might have, its all laid out on the pcb. just follow the instructions right?

Easy......you just let everything else slide
Seriously, it was a lunch-break, all weekend, late-night-after-the-kid's-homework affair. What is it with addition, anyway - explain the method? Add the frikkin' numbers up, for crying out loud, he's in third grade.....
Anyway, my apologies for not keeping up with or being brief in correspondence, and for putting off the long-promised projects thread. This project has been a greater time-soak than we anticipated, but it's worth it. It's not going to end too soon, I'm afraid. The ops manual and technical manual are still in the works.
That Klee 1 Romeo speaks of is the name-sake of this project, BTW.
No more boards can be reserved now, loss, but there's a chance maybe some boards that were reserved may not sell, you never know. In that case, I can contact you.
The build instructions manual is wonderful Scott, simply wonderful. Not only is it a clear and concise look at assembling this beast, it also shines as a general SDIY manual as well. So many general topics are explained so lucidly (and with purty colors too) that even for those not building an electro-music Klee it would be a good read. Fortunatly, I am building this monster and am better for having this document. Although, I still don't know what I'm gonna do for a panel...

Here is the link to show you where to get full part kits. No panels are offered by myself or anyone yet and is left up to the builder to dream up their own designs. So far this thread has demonstrated several innovative front panel designs that can be used as a good examples for your own design. My panel design file has been posted and can be downloaded and edited in "Front Panel Designer" if you want.

Thanks guys. Tom, Bill and Andy helped out quite a bit, too, combing through and pointing out corrections and ways to make parts less ambiguous.
We figure you guys have been patient enough through this whole process that we should at least make the build process a easy as possible. Andy really sent it in the right direction by designing the boards the way he did with the connectors and all - I can't imagine the cluster it would have been otherwise.
Here's the first phrase uttered by my little fella! I know it's a big file, but I managed to get it to come right back to where it started. The basic pattern has 5 bits active, pots full or half way (not that it matters, as I haven't tuned it yet! ) I shifted to 16/1 and then did an invert B for a couple of cycles, then brought it back to 8/2. This is the kind of "real time" playing I'm really looking forward to when it's tuned. Creating passages which go into the unknown and back again, and then seeing what I can jam along to it.
It's driving my ASM-2, (I don't have functional triggers yet, so you can imagine what that's gonna do! ) then into a small microverb.

Andy,
That's great! My first patterns were never that varied. It's nice to hear a new Klee bound out of the nursery
That's one of the fun things about the Klee - you can definitely go into uncharted water yet bring it back. When I've had the chance to play with it lately, I've been exploring different ways to do that. The method often depends on how the pattern works out, but I really like using the Bus 1 load switch to do it, or even just punching the manual load at the right time. Shuffling the bits around will often get you back to where you started, too. When I get the chance, I'd like to pull out some of my dividers and try the external load input, too. When I get a good pattern going, I'll make sure I have it "saved" on the pattern switches, then explore where it goes with the different controls. Then I work out a way to segue from one variation of the pattern to the other. I've found, with the controls actually on a panel instead of on a breadboard, you can get some really complex, repeatable sequences set up by manipulating the controls at the right time.
You can also change things considerably without altering the pattern, too. One thing I relied on a lot when it was still on breadboard was varying the voices without changing the pattern. My EGs each have a three position time constant switch on them - short, medium and long, and that really provides a lot of instant variation without changing anything else. Usually I'll go from short to medium and back.
Also, when using triggers alone without gates on EGs, or obviously with drum voices, the merge switches can really transform a fixed pattern. Same goes for the gate bus switches, but in a different way. Using gates instead of triggers throws an even different light on a pattern as well when manipulating the merge switches. Then, using them together just adds even more variation.
Luka - fine tune pots - I'll have to think about that one for a bit.

Klee 2 Sample
Scott,
Your Klee Build manual is amazing, a real class act, great work!!!
I have been working with the Klee 2 most of the evening looking for a new sound and came up with this sample. It has kind of a western feel to it. I didn't change any of the Klee settings throughout the song, only manipulated the external modules.
I was going to sort out the gate/trigger issue and tune my Klee when I got home from work tonight.
I stood in front of it flicking switches and pushing sliders for an hour instead. Now, I'm tired, and can't be bothered doing anything else. Off to bed! _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there.
