Mebbe so Very Happy

Board sets were ordered from the supplier yesterday, BTW. I'll put an announcement up soon with the details, etc.

Cheers,

Prophei brought it to my attention the BOMs were smoked by the server crash of ought seven, and were never re-stoked. The board BOM's can be found in the parts kit thread. Here's the panel BOM, updated to reflect the mods. Also, there's an updated interconnect which reflects the mods which are reflected in the BOM which gives one pause to reflect on the reflections - reflexively, of course.

i have no idea how you guys are getting such good music out of this thing :p
sounds intense
cant wait to play with mine

some quesitons....
am i right in saying if i only use 1 shift it basically acts like a normal sequencer???

i have got 2 sets coming , will i be able to set it up so that i can switch it from being connected (32step) to 2 separate units (2x16step)

and bugbrand... whats that little circuit on the bottom lleft of your klee?

I think you could possibly cascade two Klees by crossing over the "return line". By this I mean the connection which has the "invert B" option on it. It's through this connection that the bits are fed from stage 16 back into stage 1. If you wired the option to send these bits to stage 1 of the other Klee, then you'd be halfway there. You then need the option of having both Klees share the same delayed clock, (you'll find out more about that when you get the schems) and then, of course, you'd need to mix the A+B CV outs of both units (easy).

I think,......

What do you reckon Scott?

BTW Yes, if you only have one stage active, it acts as a standard sequencer.

would there be a way where you could patch in your total step count?
just in terms of being able to sequence triplets

i remember when i built my baby10in my speaknspell i limited it to 8 steps by setting one of the steps to reset the clock. if it's the same for the klee, could this be a patch or set to a rotary switch so you could set how long the sequence would be..?

scuse my lack of electronics knowledge
i just usually follow other poeple's schems
but im trying to learn Wink

I'm still not sure about how you control the number of steps on the Klee. It's the one part of Scott's explaination which still eludes me. I'll be powering up my prototype fairly soon so I'll find out then.

Hi,

Use the load input with the gatebus. You have only a single bit moving and when it hits the gatebus switch you have activated, the gatebus pulse reloads it to the position you've set in the pattern switch. You can control both the start position and seq length.

Yes, you are. If you program Bit 1 has high, and leave the rest low, in 16X1 mode, it will operate exactly as a standard 16X1 sequencer (using the A+B out). If you program Bit 1 high and program Bit 2 high, in the 8X2 mode it will act as a standard 8X2 sequencer (Using the A Out and B Out).

Yes. The Gate Bus 1 Load Switch will serve this purpose. In terms of the "one bit" sequences mentioned above, it would work exactly like your Baby 10. If you have Bit 1 high as the pattern, and Gate Bus Switch 5 set for Gate Bus 1, turning the Gate Bus 1 Load patch on will give you a four step sequence: Stages 1 through 4. If you switch Gate Bus 1 to Stage 7, it will be a six step sequence (Stages 1 through 6) and so forth. If you are in the 8X2 Mode, both sections will be six steps long. If you are in 16X1 mode, the second register will do nothing (If you have no bit progammed other than one bit in the first section).

This is only the tip of the iceberg of what you can do with even 1 bit patterns and the Gate Bus 1 Load switch, however. Say you have a sixteen step sequence going and you decide you only want to sequence steps 4 through 8. You flip Bit 1 off, flip bit 4 on, and set stage 9's gate bus switch to bus 1. Now the sequencer will step through stages 4 through 8 only. In other words, you can "single out" any number of sequential stages to create smaller sequences out of your sixteen step sequence. You can do this on the fly with a bit of switch flipping strategy. A favorite trick of mine is to set a row of gate bus switches to Gate Bus 1. As the sequence progresses, you can flip them off one by one to make the sequence progressively longer ( or vice versa). Or, you can jump from one length to any other length quite easily using this method.

Load Gate Bus 1 can also serve as a "skip" control, with some creative switch positioning. Having the ability to program any bit as the "starting" bit also makes things nice for synchronizing your sequence with other things.

All of this can be done easily by connecting any of the gate bus gate or trigger outputs to the external load input as well. Note, this is not the same thing as having Gate Bus 1 Load on when using multi-bit Klee patterns - there's a marvelous difference, but I'll save that explanation for the manual, because it would make this post even larger.

Quote:

This can be externally patched. If you set either Gate Bus 1 or Gate Bus 3 to Merge On, set only one gate bus switch to that gate bus, then patch that gate bus gate output to the random input of the second Klee, the second Klee will accept the output of the first Klee as its data input. The merge switch must be on for the signal to be high when the clock pulse comes along and tells Klee #2 to accept the bit (if merge is off, the gate will go low on the second phase of the clock pulse).

Then set the second Klee up the same way and patch its merged gate bus out to the first Klee's random input. Now, providing each gate bus switch is set to stage 16, you have up to 32 steps in a one bit sequence. You set both Klee's to random mode, program the bit or bits you want to circulate through them on the pattern switches, load the pattern, and the clock (which is patched to both Klees) will clock the pattern around the Klees until the cows come home. It sounds complicated, but a picture of it makes it much more clear.

There are a myriad of variations and possibilities with this patch I'll leave up to you guys with two Klees to explore. Just as a hint, consider how patching the external load would affect it, or how the 8X2 random mode would. With Invert B on or off, in that case. Or "tapping" from different stages on the merged gate busses.

The best thing is to just experiment with it. That's all I've ever done. If your experience is like mine, once you have a single voice or a couple or three voices going, you'll find the Klee will just....do it. I think Theff would agree with me - you can be programming along, experimenting, and often you flip a single switch and the most wonderful thing will just pop out of it. Then, you just want to record it. It's hard to explain. I'm excited to think of all the things you guys will be able to do and the styles you'll come up with. THeff's definitely got his own take on how to use the thing, and Tom Bugs does to.

Take care,
Scott

Hey Scott and Luka,

I have been out of the loop here for a week or so due to work and training classes etc. Luka, when I first noticed Scott's thread on the original Klee I looked at the schematics and saw the shift register and thought, OK that's interesting but what's the big deal? Then I started listening to Scott's samples and said, wow that is really unique and cool! When it grew into the Klee 2 with more samples posted I determined that I was going to see for myself what this thing was like.

Now that mine is built I have to say it is the most creative self contained module on the synth. In my experience so far you don't approach the Klee with melody or pattern in your mind and then try to program that melody or pattern. Instead you hook up some basic modules, turn it on, and start tweaking until you hear a cool melody or bass pattern. Once you get a cool pattern you just start building it up with more voices, filter changes, tempo changes, maybe some percussion or whatever else you can think of. Before you know it you have a very unique full sounding synth creation.

Sometimes the the experience is so emotional that you might need a Klee-nex! Laughing

Regards,

Tim

Andy, very cool for sure ! I don't believe I have ever seen anyone use a wood finish on a synthesizer before. I have to be honest, I didn't think I would like the look of wood grain on a synthesizer panel but you have changed my mind with this photo Cool Great work !!

?? Haven't you been to my website? Smile Every panel in my modular is made from either 5/16" Maple or 1/4" Oak. They're all stained Berry Purple and have 3 coats of polyurethane. Knobs are all Birch or Poplar, with 2 or 3 coats. No metal panelling, at all. Wink

I'll be designing my Klee panel layout, once I have the boards in stock here. Smile

You've seen my ASM-2 haven't you?

Yeah, I kinda like the way the Klee has turned out. There are some rough spots on the Lazertran, where I followed up too quickly with over diluted polyurethane, but overall, it looks pretty classy. You can also see where it didn't quite match, size wise. I think Lazertran will be heaps easier to do on smaller panels, (it tends to stretch by about 0.5 to 1%, so it's difficult if you've already drilled your holes and then try to match it.) I'd recommend laying it down and then drilling pilot holes based on the Lazertran. (This is fraught with it's own problems, as anyone who's tried to control a drill bit on wood will know. Fine if you have a drill press though)

All,

Here's something to try: Route the "A" CV output to a DC mixer along with some DC bias going into the mixer. Take the output of the mixer and route it back into the external scale input voltage of the Klee. Dial in some lag time on the "A" CV or on the output of the DC mixer and you will get some interesting portamento effects only on certain notes. Notes that are directed to the "A" bus will raise and lower the scale reference for the "B" and "A/B" and cause them to slide. I didn't make any samples of this yet but it sounded cool and different.

Regards,

Tim

!!!

There's a patch that never occurred to me! I gotta try that!

I did do a variation on your patch a week or so ago ( the one with the ramp wave controlling the clock), but I patched one of the CV outputs to the VCO clocking the Klee. Quite Buchloid/Subotnicle results there Very Happy

But this one sound really cool - the Klee feeding off itself. Cool

Cheers,
Scott
