There seems to be a preponderance of cutting edge musicians/composers on the west coast...many that are severly more underarted than their east cost counterparts. At this years Woodstockhausen festival, I was the only person from the east coast who had bothered to come. The concert was 5+ hours of live and tape performances and all I can say is that the quality of the music performed was of an incredibly high quality. Also, the performers seem to be much more open and less pretentious than many on the east coast...probably the California sunshine and the tall Redwoods I was made to feel very welcome and the event itself was of a tremendous artistic success. The audience was at about 200 which to me is a pretty high number for a "new music" concert of 5+ hours! _________________ Joseph Benzola

Carlo, where's the review?
Jbenzola, I used to live in the Bay Area. People there are generally much less pretentious than those from the Atlantic side of the country. I guess the artists there take after the people. I would really liked to have attended Woodstockhausen, but I'd just returned from a trip to Europe and was short on currency. Tim Thompson did a piece there. Did you catch it? |

I didn't do a piece on stage this year, unlike the previous 3 years, but I did do the big interactive installation that was outside, called "Dancing under the Stars of Lyra". You probably saw it, it would be hard to miss a 12-foot high lyre with flashing strings. Here's a short video:

I'm delighted you got to experience it. I've been living in the bay area for 7 years and try to check out a fair amount of the experimental music scene. Woodstockhausen is unique in its combination of variety, quality, active inclusion, and sheer sense of fun. This was the first year it was held indoors, so the feel was a bit different, less informal. Having it outdoors previously, especially when it was nestled beneath the redwoods in Wayne's side yard, made it a bit more special, though very challenging for the equipment and logistics. But in exchange for losing a bit of the outdoor magic, the indoor version was able to provide a much more predictable presentation, and the variety and quality of the music was the same as always, if not better.
