Following on from the thread I posted a while back about vintage hi-fi out of Japan. Several people asked the obvious next question - what about instruments - so I spent a while actually working through it rather than guessing. Posting the useful parts.

Digimart is the piece most people outside Japan have never heard of.

デジマート / Digimart is run by Rittor Music (the publisher behind the Japanese guitar and keyboard magazines) and it is where essentially every real bricks-and-mortar instrument shop in Japan lists its used stock. Browsing it is browsing thousands of physical shops at once, and the used grading is conservative in the way Japanese secondhand listings generally are.

The catch is not language, it is plumbing: there is no English storefront, no international checkout and no overseas shipping. It needs a Japanese address and a Japanese payment method. So it is not a store you can shop, it is a catalogue you can read - and then the flea-market platforms (Mercari, Yahoo!) sit alongside it with private sellers on the same gear.

The 100V question, which is more nuanced for instruments than for hi-fi.

Japan is 100 V - 50 Hz east of the Fuji River, 60 Hz west. Three cases, and it is worth knowing which one you are in before you buy:

- External PSU, universal input. Most modern gear. The brick says 100-240 V and you need a plug adapter and nothing else. Almost everything Boutique/volca/AIRA-sized is here.
- External PSU, 100 V only. Common on Japanese-market units from the 90s and 2000s. The synth itself is fine, the wall wart is not - and a correctly specified third-party supply is usually cheaper than shipping a transformer. Check polarity and whether the jack wants AC or DC before you buy a replacement; getting that wrong on a vintage board is expensive.
- Internal transformer, hard-wired for 100 V. Older Japanese-market keyboards and rack gear. Here you do need a step-down transformer, and it needs headroom over the rated draw. Running a 100 V unit on a US 120 V outlet is about 20% over - it will work, it will run hot, and it shortens the life of the caps. On 230 V it is destroyed instantly.

Mains frequency almost never matters on anything with a digital clock. It matters on old motor-driven gear, which in this hobby means tape echoes and drum machines with synchronous motors rather than synths.

What the domestic listings actually cost.

I pulled these live on 7 September 2026, so they are one afternoon's snapshot rather than a price guide - but the spread is the point:

- Boss DS-1, used - 6,600 yen (US$45.54)
- Korg volca keys, described as clean and function-checked - 15,980 yen (US$110.26)
- Roland JD-08 Boutique - 46,000 yen (US$317.40)
- Roland JX-1, used - 46,300 yen (US$319.47)
- Korg MS-20 mini, new from a Japanese retailer - 84,700 yen (US$584.43)

The vintage end is where the gap against Reverb pricing is widest. The new end is not always cheaper once freight is in, and that is the honest version - a new MS-20 mini is a commodity, and you should check your local price before importing one.

Reading the listings.

Four words do most of the work: 動作確認済 (function confirmed), 美品 (excellent condition), 未使用 (unused), ジャンク (junk - sold as non-working or untested, and Japanese sellers use this label honestly, so it is a real source of repairable gear rather than a trap). 完動品 means fully working.

Search in katakana - ローランド, コルグ, ヤマハ, シンセサイザー, エフェクター - plus the model number. Roman-letter searches skew towards export-facing listings and export-facing prices.

The freight trap is dimensions, not weight.

Pedals are the best possible thing to import: small, light, and the marginal cost of the fourth one in the same box is close to nothing. Keyboards are the worst. Every carrier charges on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length x width x height in cm, divided by 5000), and a boxed 61-key board is around a metre long. That is what pushes a 10 kg keyboard into a 30 kg price band, and it is also why economy lanes sometimes refuse the parcel outright on size while happily taking something heavier and squarer. Get a quote on the actual box before you commit, not after.

Practical upshot: batch the small stuff and ship it once, treat anything keyboard-sized as its own shipment with its own quote.

Disclosure, so it is on the table: I buy and forward through OneMall, a Japan proxy service, and the full write-up of the Digimart route with the rest of the detail is here - this is the search I use to see what is listed. Treat that as one source rather than a neutral one. The voltage and volumetric-weight arithmetic is physics and carrier tariff, and holds whoever you buy through.

Happy to look up what something specific is going for domestically if anyone is weighing a purchase up.
