I was reading PyMusique lets you buy iTunes songs without DRM and PyMusique author hacks Apple iTunes fix but the link to the application ( http://fuware.nanocrew.net/pymusique/ ) does not seem to work. Is it me or, maybe, black choppers got there and arrested everyone involved Question

Yup.. or some alien bounty hunters..

What many people simply don´t understand is that the whole iTunes DRM scheme is part of what Apple has to deliver in order to have the major labels and all the various artist orgs etc. on their side.

The greatest online music shop on the net=iTunes=a decent DRM scheme=support from all the major labels=attracting a lot of customers= great place for independent labels=a win win situation

That hacker simply had to go...

He is probably on the bottom of a lake ..

Hacker is an honorable term for a programmer. I proudly consider myself a hacker, but I don't break into other people's systems. The fellow who broke the Apple protection scheme may well be a hacker, but let's not use the term as a synonym for thief or worse.

I suspect these guys did not understand what they were doing.

Quote:
....according to the Terms of Service users agree to when they first sign up for the iTunes Music Store.

"You will not access the Service by any means other than through software that is provided by Apple for accessing the Service,"

However, what they started out to do was just that..

Quote:
"Just like Mail.app is a client for accessing mail servers, iTunes is a client for accessing the iTunes Music Store servers. PyMusique is a new client that uses the same communication protocol that iTunes uses to access the iTMS," Johansen told MacCentral. "When an iTMS client buys a song, iTMS will provide the song in m4a format (unprotected). Unlike iTunes, PyMusique will not add DRM to the song before saving it to disk."

Who did it:

Quote:
PyMusique is the work of three developers -- Travis Watkins, Cody Brocious, and a name that will be familiar to some who have been watching efforts to circumvent Apple DRM technology -- Jon Lech Johansen, "DVD Jon" -- the Norwegian hacker who was once at the center of a controversy with the movie industry for producing DeCSS, a DVD decryption utility that enables users to copy the contents of copy-protected DVDs onto their computers.

Seems like Jon prefers being called a hacker. that is what he calls himself in some recent interviews.

Even though it is very obvious the violated the user agreement, I thnk they simply did not understand that their "product idea" was a bad one.

It seems they are on a mission.

Correct URL is: http://playlistmag.com/news/2005/03/18/pymusique/forums.html

BTW.. it seems like you have to enter the site before such links actually work.. http://playlistmag.com/

Sorry for the OT but there is always the term "cracker" which covers computer criminals. I consider myself a proud hacker.

Regrettably the popular understanding of hacker now seem to be taken as "computer criminal".

So, this DRM scheme works on the client end! That is pretty interesting.

Presents some interesting ethical, moral, and legal issues. Can one be held to a user agreement that says you buy this data file (a song in this instance) but you can only use their software on that file? Any other use of the file is not authorized. Shocked

I have never bought a song from iTunes. I don't even like it on my computer because it seems to take over all of the media files on my system. Not really take over them, but it tries to be the single point of contact for them. When I installed iTunes, it replaced virtually all other media players in my Windows Registry. I found it to be obtrusive, so I deleted it.
