Ikea?! Right, if you have all the cadcam work sorted out for one of the production lines ( that companies like IKEA get their stuff from ) then this is not a big problem. You can get a container full of stuff for little money ( .. and still smack the standard IKEA markup on top of it + 10% because this is for a special segment ) and make a decent profit.
I dunno really, but I tend to think that is not what is going to happen here..
As for market opportunity, any of us can do this.. but you´ll have to order something like 500 units. So.. the "little money" is ..well..
. but there can of course be made some money here.. and you can lose some just as well. It seems that something like 60% of the modular synth geeks tend to prefer to build their own cabs just for the hell of it.
However, entry level systems are usually sold with cabs. And Doepfer systems are mostly about filling a Doepfer cab or three.
Randal´s module based cab series seems nice at first until you start thinking about the real issues involved. Is it likely that your average modular synth geek will want to rip out a box with say 4 modules in order to use it as a standalone desktop system? OK, at times you might want to exchange modules.. but after having done that for 2-5 times most geeks will build more cabs. How the stuff is lined up in each cab is a very personal and very important part of the workflow. Bottom line is that I am convinced that such a concept looks better on paper than it will perform. You buy the stuff, set up the rig.. try it out a few times and then pretty much ignores the modularity bit of it. And you won´t buy that specific product the next time you need another cab. Instead you will pay a lot of attention to where you put each module in order to solve the actual workflow issues at hand. So.. hardened synthesists ( this is not a viagra joke incoming ) might try the concept but soon ditch it.
I know the concept is kinda seemingly popular with preamps these days. You buy preamp modules that you can plug into a preamp cab and thus you can configure it just the way you want whenver you feel like it. But these things don´t really sell well at all. We tend to buy the stuff we want and when we have it we will want to have everything in the rack at the same time and all hot and wired up to go. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

IKEA are NOT in my good books right now. Their logistics both concerning stock control and delivery are in serious need of a good pummelling (sorry for the OT!) _________________ ACHTUNG!

Having been enlightened, I know that, with FE rails, that could be either a Euro or Frac claymore.
Does it come included with JiffyPop Dispenser?

Turning a profit may be harder, now that there is at least one other DIY guy in the case business. Worse yet, this guy is based in Beijing, land of cheap labor.
And don't think Randal isn't aware of it:
http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/topic-6164-0-0.html
Around page 3, Randal gets to helpfully put in a plug for his products in his initimable I'm-doing-this-to-help-clarify way:
| Quote: | | I've said it of some of my own cases, lower prices come for a reason. This is a nice case. But there are still good reasons to buy a P6, IMO. And to remi\ove any question of bias, this will also be true of the P6 compared to my Synthcases. |
Come on, dude, let the guy have a thread...
His later monologue against shrouded headers is classic Googellian Randal.
An excerpt:
| Quote: | | We mfrs. do NOT use shrouded headers because this sort of thing happens |
"We mfrs." apparently does not include the guy whose product is the topic of this thread. _________________ My Site |

"We mfrs."
I love it. First off, he makes it sound like he's an established "mfr." and has had products out on the market for years. Second off, he makes it sound like there's some "Monthly Mfr. Meeting" where everyone who markets synth parts gets together and agrees on what is right and what is wrong.
Oh wait, "mfr" stands for Manufacturer. I was thinking it was "Mother Fu**er." My bad.

But Scott - what he says there is very true! (and that's one of the annoyances I see in Euroland - no, I'm not a buyer either)
But, yes, I do get your points about 'us mfrs' - if you followed (ALL!) the PlanB sh*ts there was one post where PG said how when he was chatting with the 'other manufacturers' they'd laugh at how the muffwigglers were getting so uppity about things..
And it does change the feel of things when you read 'mfr' as motherfucker rather than manufacturer haha! _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

I don't think there is a "right" in this case. I understand the point - but if it were me, I'd want power connections keyed as a matter of personal principle; that's what I meant by "I can dig". I can't imagine having cables originating from the backplane out through the front of the unit that could be either upside down or rightside up. IOW, I'd rather deal with it at the module level than think about it on the other end. I'm not a motherfucker, but I've worked for one for twenty odd years, and I can tell you if any engineer designed any connection that was not keyed, it would be fixed in the first ECN. But, we have the luxury of not having to work with a "standard" gone wild.
Second point is, this is MW's thread, and Randal all but accuses him of leaving things open for people to damage their modules. No, I correct that, he does accuse him. I don't think MW made any secret about the keying and orientation of the the backplane. Particularly because it is a lax standard, the honus is on the user to understand that the module they are inserting is oriented the right way. If you take Doepfer's approach (without shrouded headers) the user can plug it into the case or the module backward. If you take MWs approach, you can plug it into the module backward, and it's more of a bitch to fix at that end. In either case, things have the potential to be plugged in backwards, so neither one cures the problem. Either or, MW or Doepfer wouldn't be responsible for a bzzzted module should someone plug a module in backward. The motherfucker I work for files that kind of stuff under RTFM.
Third point is, the Doepfer module question was an honest question: the Appendage has two ribbon connectors - the Aux which is shrouded and the Doepfer, which is unshrouded. I've been curious as to why one was shrouded and the other wasn't. Turns out Bill was following the Doepfer standard, as it is, which is fine by me. I just didn't know. Anyway, Randal answered that in the first sentence, and the rest of his post was wasted, at least on me.
Cheerios,
