Hello,

Any tips or tricks to reduce latency for those of us who would like to use ChucK for real-time effects processing?

I suppose a good place to start is a fast CPU and using a low number for bufsize, example:

Code:
chuck --dac3 --bufsize64 test.ck

Any other ideas?

When you use a low buffer size you get a faster response but you also have less "reserves" in case something like the OS wants some CPU as well.

So; one thing to do is to make sure less processes could interrupt your calculations.
Things like chat programs, virus scanners, disc indexing, automatic updates, etc, etc, etc all might interrupt ChucK leading to smaller or larger glitches.

There is the factor of latency inherent in the sound interface you are using. Moving from a crappy M-Audio box to a MOTU Ultralite (both firewire interfaces) got rid of most of the latency problems in my OSX system. A bit of a bummer to have to rectify, if this is the case.

Curious how I never had latency problems with a Soundblaster card in a PC at the end of the 90s...

/Stefan

Edit: typo

Could be many things, maybe you weren't as critical then as we are now. Win98 could be stripped down to bare bones as well so that would have very little overhead and interruptions.... etc.
