Sk-1 pot Subject description: Which pot to use |
 |
|
| I am working on my second casio sk-1. In the first I tried to integrate some potentiometers I had into the bends, but they weren't the correct rating, as they did very little. I don't have a multimeter, so I was just wondering if anyone could help me out, and perhaps give me a range of pots I might order, to use with an sk-1. |

You're a bit short on information here. Do you want to replace existing pots, or replacing resistors in the circuit by pots ?
I've got the circuit-drawing, but I'm not going to publish it, due to copywrong issues.
But maybe I could help you with specific functions. _________________ 0.618033988 |

| I'm sorry for being short on information, but I gave all I had. What I want to know is if any one has an experience to share about the kind of pots to use with an sk-1. For instance, I wired up a patch bay on my last one, and tried to feed my patches through pots to fade effects in and out, but to no avail. The points I soldered to were the ones specified at http://www.casperelectronics.com/sk1-patchbay/ I know I am being vague, but I am not asking for specific information, really. Just experiences. Maybe the topic is just a bother, I don't know. |

For the sk-1 im working on right now, i've used a whole range of pot values. I've noticed smaller ones are giving me more use, eg 5k, and 10k, if i had some 1k or 100 ohm pots i'd have probably used them too.
I think i have mostly 10k pots in it, but i also know theres a 1meg in there too. i'd say, as a bender, its best to experiment with all sorts of pots. Build up a collection of 100 ohm, 1k, 5k, 10k, 50k, 100k, 500k, and 1meg pots. I have a few 2 meg pots and a few 10 meg pots that i've had for a long time and never used cause the smaller pots seem to work better more often.
Further more, i like to use pots on a connection that does something on a range of resistances. Like, when the pot is all the way to the left, the connection is open and it doesnt effect anything, then as you go up, it does more and more.
Find your bend, then gator clip it to the pot. Try different pots that will open the connect when all the way to the left, and then give you the MOST expression as you turn it to the right. A small value pot can give you lots of expression of the bend as you turn when a large value pot will work, but will give you a smaller range of expression as you turn (like only turning it off and on when at a full turn) Get it?
I've noticed though that most connections on the 3 chip patch by you've made from the casper electronic notes dont seem to work well with pots and are mostly just kinda off/on. Some connections there can be used well with pots, you just gotta find em.
Any more questions and i'll try to help. |

| Thanks for the info. That's basically what I'm after. I really only had the patch bay on the last one, and wondered if those bends could be controlled by pots. I have worked with lots of toys, and never really noticed any pattern regarding the resistance of pots. One toy would be exceptionally sensitive, and I wouldn't even be able to use a pot, instead favoring body contacts, while others took my highest rated pot. I guess I'll order some lower range pots, and get experimenting. |

Sometimes, beside the value, it can also make a difference in performance whether you use Lineair or Logaritmic pots. _________________ 0.618033988 |
