Herbie Hancock and G-Force
| Quote: | | The real star of a Future2Future performance is another denizen of Herbie’s iBook: G-force, the visual generating program which is part of the Macintosh iTunes software, the output of which he has projected onto a screen behind the band. “It’s genius,” says Herbie. “It’s adaptable; you can use Applescript to modify it. It generates visuals based on what the band is playing at any given moment. The audience gets immersed in this aural and visual environment. When you experience it, the effect is greater than what you can imagine. You think it’s going to be at one level, but it ends up being a much deeper experience.” |

G-Force: A Milestone
G-Force is the most dynamic and sophisticated, yet entirely artistic, music visualization available—and it keeps getting better. This is a direct result of creator Andy O'Meara's strong roots in mathematics and computing theory combined with a passion for music and visual art. If you've seen G-Force in action, you know this isn't an exaggeration—see the screenshots for yourself. Andy's will continue to change the face of music visualization, but it will take many months of hard work—ultra-dynamic, yet highly artistic, music visualization is uncharted waters.

OK, there are several programs like this that are plugins for Winamp, and for other media players too. They make visual patterns based on the music, mostly seem to respond to volume and frequency changes. There are usually lots of parameters you can change and this makes the visuals look different. On Winamp, the parameters can be setup to change at random, so things don't look too repetitive.
I have played around with these visualizers from time to time, but mostly when listening to uninteresting music. It seems for me at least, when the music gets interesting, I prefer to close my eyes and let my internal visualizer kick in. My mind, and I'm pretty sure there isn't much unique about my mind, comes up with three dimensional images, and the visualizations are much more complex than these programs produce - using elements from sometimes disjoint memories.
I think of these kinds of visualizer programs are really color organs. |

G-Force is short for God Force
I haven’t checked it out for a few years, I prefer stuff by Ryan Geiss (milkdrop is very nice) Looks great on my Phillips Plasma when listening to undemanding, dance orientated electronic music. Don’t seem to have time to do that these days, can’t remember the last time I actually rented a DVD. |
