Hi,

only recently I have noticed that when I turn the following knobs:

1. Sustain from ENV3
2. Tempo/Clock
3. Knob #5 below the LCD
4. 24dB Lowpass volume in the Post Mixer

the corresponding value doesn't change smoothly but jumps here and there until the knob reaches its final destination. Even then it might play a bit, e.g. if it's maxed to 100 it might go 99.7, 99.5, 99.9, 100 in random order. It doesn't do this always. If I modulate any of the corresponding parameteres, e.g. if I modulate the tempo/clock from the modulation wheel the change is smooth. Confused

Any suggestions??

Unlikely, but the pots could be dirty. You could try cleaning them with a squirt of Servisol switch cleaner. If you dont want to open it, remove the knob and let some penetrate via the pot shaft.
Is there an audible effect? ( I usually judge things by ear, and rarely read the parameter values. ) Interesting that soft knob 5 also controls sustain.

I have tried cleaning these spots, but I am afraid it didn't do anything. Shall I have it serviced? Confused

Well i'm no electronics whizz but it seems you will need a suitably qualified technician to fix this problem. Are you on the mainland?

if not, might be worth trying,
otherwise ->survising /repair

A new set of knobs maybe? Or clean up the ones that are problematic? I don't really want to have the machine serviced.. the idea that some lousy engineer will open the A6 is not very encouraging.

Myconoid, what is the serial number of your A6?

when under guarantee ,i would certainly send it to the servicestation when all other had failed as you describe.
and besides that to my opinion the numark. alesis servicetechnicien i encountered was very skilled, so don't be too afraid of those greasy fingers
. might also be some other internal hardware problem unsolvable by us normal folks.so my guess is contact them.

(21)A10412045700249 is my serial number.
I turned receive sysex from the global menu under midi tab to off and i didnt experience any of those things since, but i dont think it can be related to that, so i am wating those to happen anytime soon.

Well i've noticed the same problem too!

I was like WTF how i can't set the tempo to be exactly 120. I had to press the up and down arrows simultaneously to get "exact" values.
Also, when i tried to put oscs to be 41 i couldn't do that, it always went lil past it or lil less, up and down arrows didn't get me "exact" values in there.
Very weird and nasty, i didn't have much time to wonder trough it then and thought it's perhaps normal? God knows what affects what in that beast of hardware synth.

I'll check my sn too and post it.
It's manufactured some day, some month in 2002 though. =)
I guess the date display is US way which would be month/day/year as opposed to european style of day/month/year?

by the way, lil off topic but howcome all leds doesn't light always?
Can't remember if the behavior occurred more likely in mix mode.

The knob values and pages on the screen change more often when building a more complex patch.sometimes i cant even control a single parameter on the panel.I am sure it has to do with the digital components of the synth and i think they need to be replaced.

i don't have that exact experience , however strange ( hanging and undisplaying) things sometimes happen when editing a complex ( many modulations and controlroutes) patch .Specially when the trackinggenerator get involved too. always thought of it to be a problem of insufficient/ going to the limits of the processorcapacity. however on the most i don't regard it as such a problem and can live well with it.
( amazing, even the digital part of the a6 has analog aspects )

I have never experienced such a thing on my Andromeda either. The only thing I have noticed is a very small delay when the LCD is refreshed after some parameters are adjusted quickly. Which is something absolutely normal if you consider that the Coldfire is doing A LOT of things simultaneously.

I don't consider it a problem either. In fact I have come to expect such behavior from hybrid circuitry, what is displayed and what is heard *occasionally* might be a little inconsistent. Or maybe the aging effect has visited my Andromeda already! How cool.. Cool

I just tested tempo parameters like 15 minutes when i had the spare time to fool around between recording stuff.

I could set hard value of 120 Beats and i wanted to make example the beat to be 119 per minute. It was impossible no matter what you did it was always off. Only other hard value i got was 125,00 beats per minute.
I'm not going to sequence anything from Andromeda when using internal tempo but anyway... this is definitely not normal right? I mean c'mon.

Closest i got it to be 119 was 119,045 and some other tempos varied with almost 0.500 bpm. I tested with only one patch ( i had midi connected with no filters on the other end so i didn't want to change patches ). I haven't reset andro and will experiment more tomorrow.

I'll definitely won't send it to repairment yet since it has many years of warranty left. Build date is 4/12/2002 and s/n is
(21)A1611045700638

45700 in serial would seem to be constant ( based on mycon and my serials lol ) on serial and perhaps could be code for manufacturing facility??

Threefingers could you post your S/N for the curiosity of it please?
Or PM it to me if you don't wanna give it publicly =)

Hi Divyx,

I am afraid there is nothing you can do about the internal tempo of the A6. I know it can be a problem but this is how the internal calculations are done. You cannot set it e.g. at 119 BPM, so either you have to use 119,045 (although this is hardly a workaround) or you have to sequence the A6 externally.

I wonder what the guys at Alesis were thinking when they working on MIDI.

You don't need to, there is nothing they can do. I doubt that even a utopian OS release can solve this problem.

I will send you the SN of my A6 as soon as I get home.
Smile

Hi Threefingers.

Thank you for clearing that out.

If it really is "supposed" to work that way then i take it as it is and kiss my andro again for having one. Makes me really amused hahaha =P
I guess it's just the word *engineers... Yes, pun intented. =)

Arpeggiator or sequencer has made my andro to freeze couple times so sequencing externally is definitely something i'd do when in live. Booting andro takes up long time because my andro doesn't boot up if turned on too quickly, it hangs up.

This is offtopic but have you guys seen any cheapy good hardware sequencers ( needs to have just midi and ofcourse very big note/song memory ) lately? When i look up some recent stuff they all seem to have all kinds of un-necessary features that raises the price big time.
I'm looking for a prince range of 300 euros max.

Yeah please mail the s/n you have Threefingers.

Oh yeah! Threefingers or anybode, can you guys test this issue ( issue of exact values ) with osc tuning too please? Since i once couldn't get exactly 41 and othertime i did got it. =P I just wanted to know if this is normal andro behavior too =)

My A6 stuck on such an occassion only once.

One of the most difficult moments for electronics is when they are powered up. Whenever you switch it off, for whatever reason, give it a 20 seconds before you switch it back on.

How about a Korg M1? Laughing Laughing At this price range and with the features you request I am not aware of any decent hardware sequencer. Unless you want a second-hand ofcourse, in which case, you should be able to find plenty.

Can you be a little more specific? I was able to tune the A6 precisely to the frequency I wanted with the Fine-tuning knob, have you tried this?

Best,
Yannis

Hi there!

Quote:

My andro has stuck around 5 times when in such occasion.

No worries, external sequencing prolly works it out. If not, i just do backing tracks and be happy =P

I gotcha. Perhaps i'm used to only boot quickly my old midi keyboard ( roland's a-37 ) if something went bad. Ofcourse andro has a LOT more to do in boot prodecure than that sort basic midi controller. Yeah, 20 secs is the thing, much less than that and as i said, it won't boot up. No worries =)

Hehe Laughing Yeah i meant to say 2nd hand. It has to be something mid 90's since i'm not too sure how good ( song memory ) in something that's been built in 80's would have. Perhaps something from Yamaha, i'd recall they had some great seqs built around 95. Hardware seq is more sexier than another synth to me =) I've started to avoid anything digital ( in synths that is ).

Quote:

Would seem to be like earlier batch than my and mycons.
Any idea if your andro was built in States or in Taiwan ( or where they made this things )?

Quote:

Yes i can be more specific. I had the tempo kind of issue with osc tuning also. I tried to set 'em to be let's say 41,000. I couldn't. I could only get 41,073 or 39,098 ( this is an example !!! ). Then at some point it again went all smooth. I'm very new to synthesis in any possible way, before andro i was preset guy who just got interested to analog synths ( thanks to Erik Norlander ) and the power you could do with them.

What i mean is, i'm not too sure 50% of the time if the settings and things are supposed to work the way i think they should =)
Makes me uncertain, i want to know what i'm doing and with this beast i sure don't have clue most of the time =) Learning is slow but fruitful.

I'm not complaining btw! the more Andro has issues, the more vintage it'll become in my mind you know =P Still loving my andro to the death.

Well, this proves that this is some quirk of your A6, doesn't it? Do you use background tuning? Temperature tuning? How long do you leave your A6 before you auto-tune? Both VCOs do this?

Mine never had exhibited such a behaviour, *very* rarely the LCD jumps to show one or the other oscillator page, I guess it's trying to tell me something Rolling Eyes but I think this is due to the problem that I mentioned in the beginning of the thread.

Methinks, we won't be able to say exactly what's happening, since this is the nature of analog, you never know what happens inside. There are worse problems in vintage analogs and by comparison this could be nit-picking.

best thing is not to look at the display too much but go for your ears.
sometimes it's difficult to loosen myself of the screen , i know , but it's well worth it.
on the other hand a thorough study of your instrument is always nice too.
think the problem might be due to dusty contacts or digital vulnerabilities.
anyway , is it really a problem , and if so , is there a workaround for it ?

Hi.

Threefinger: I never autotune anymore, very rarely, so since autotune tunes everything else almost too, it could be that. I just let my andro warm up 20 minutes and go for it. =) I have both tunings on at the moment.

Sunny: No it's not a problem at all with my skills ( there really ain't yet much when it comes to programming ) and i'll test it tomorrow again to see if i can make that behavior come back and if, go off too.
