How about this as a recommendation for a learning tool for the newbies...

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102913&cp

And you can get the "user's guide" for free. HIGHLY recommended for anyone starting out with a breadboard.
http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/uc/rsk/Support/ProductManuals/2800280_P1_PM_EN.pdf

http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/uc/rsk/Support/ProductManuals/2800280_P2_PM_EN.pdf

I think part 1 is analog and part 2 is digital. These workbooks are pretty well written, and take a very clean 'step by step' approach. They borrow some material from the other Mims' books, but have more up front info.

Too bad breadboards don't work with CMOS circuitry.

'tis the season to be charitable, so I'll offer this kind thought.

Isn't it great that Loss1234 isn't a surgeon...

...or President of the United States?

Wait a minute...oh, never mind...

You know, I really think the guy is going to make it eventually, but I have never seen a person's deep pocket book distort the learning curve so much before.

Anyway, I'll take peabrain over evil any day, so I say "three cheers for Loss1234."

Yes, he persists in his belief that it takes at least a full minute and huge clouds of smoke for something to burn out.

Like burning your dinner or something.

Yes - he fails to grasp the fact that the magic smoke tends to have finished doing its thing long before even the quickest hand can hit that kill switch.

Who designs the emoticons on electro-music? I think we need a special one for these situations - a "spit take" or "coffee through the nose" icon is sorely needed.

Might it be useful for someone to mention that to him? Or would it simply make things worse?

It would interfere with his belief system, so it would have no effect. No more than did my explaining to him what a wire is. Besides, he should have learned this from his power supply research. But feel free...

Yup! or a "screen sprayed"one. A quick google for things to steal didn't work.

Erm, that's how to get 'm basically, there are loads of sites with free emoticons, mostly repeating each other.

Personally, I think someone should have given Loss1234 a pair of safety goggles for Christmas.

Let's see, you double the resistance for every liter of smoke released, isn't that it?

I sent him packages of information in the mail and I am not sure he even read any of it. he still came up with the same questions. I gave up.

I just think is had a bit of ADD going on. I am not a doctor of course but I have seen guys like this many times in my career.

He needs to get the foundations of electronics down before he jumps in like he has. Also, he lacks focus as my statement above suggests. Like TH says, read a frekin' book and build small circuits and understand them first.

OK, those are good.

He's actually built a circuit from scratch, and it's quite possibly working, so I should be all like jackson dancing , right?

I am afraid this question had an obvious answer but he was still unsure. Maybe electronics is really something he is really not cut out for. He may be a much better musician than I or can do a rubiks cube in 15 seconds flat??? Point is, we don't know. I guess we can help him but within reason of course Very Happy Very Happy I did give up though, as I said, sending long detailed answers because it just does not sink in.

Thanks
Bill
