Mind:state and others |

Hey guys!
Since this is a music forum... I figured I'd post some links to my own stuff.
mind-state.com
If you enjoy VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Haujobb, etc. you'll like this I think. It's modern "future Pop" (if you must ). It has it's own sound of course. (I's my serious "one man band")
Newbi-RSK
My "do what I feel like" project. It's mostly old school (or modern) demo scene music. Or something. Varies from song to song.
Project Satan
The band I'm in! We make EBM, with a twist. I sing, and make the music. Mostly. (Please notice that this band is not serious. We make stuff that we enjoy making, but that doesn't make it seroius. People seem to enjoy it anyways)
I hope you guys enjoy it!
I continiously work on Mind:state so new stuff come up all the time.
Cheers
/Pelle (from sweden) |

all that being said. i don't think I'm qualified to give feedback on anything and your stuff in particular 'cuz it's not really my bag but here goes: clean and well-produced in the textbook sense but not very original or interesting to me. it sounds like a lot of other stuff. i am rather biased against 'genre' music however. when anything becomes a genre it loses it's appeal as unique, the voice of the artist and instead becomes like a reproduction of a great painting.
yeah..um..you asked hehe |

Hmm.. a genre.. or not...
I do not really understand a thing about what VNV Nation or Assemblage 23 and bands like that are doing musicwise. To me the music sounds slightly soft and it lacks a real beat and some attitude. The music also sounds pretty retro.. in the sense that it sounds inspired by the early stages of the brit new romantics wave of the late 70s 7 early 80s. I am not that happy about Haydn either.. so.. well.. what do I know..
I have checked out your MindState - Confessions and the Mother/Father thing. These sounds like pretty decent recordings of music in of the VNV style.. or something like that. I cannot really judge how close it is.
However.. I have some suggestions.. You could try to explore how you can build the track up more.. there is a text here and you can make the music work better with the text. In this case I reckon you can call this .."improving the arrangement". I suggest you listen to.. well. the music from mid 70s /early 80s of the same genre. Back then Ultravox with the most excellent singer John Foxx was something completely different than what Ultravox later became around the release of Vienna. The very first Ultravox LP would be a great choice to explore.. Many of the musicians back then came from prog and prog related genres. This generally means that the arrangements have gotten a lot of attention. I guess in retrospect i would say that what happened back then was that prog mixed with straight white rock and some lebensangst was thrown in with good measure. Inexpensive synths started to get on the market and many started to use synths in not-in-the-style-of-rick-wakeman. The german connection.. references to various strains of experimental krautrock could be said to have had an influence.. but then it is important not to forget that krautrockish stuff actually was released all over the globe at the same time.. so this was something a lot of people were doing in the period 1970-1978.
I checked out some of the other music.. I liked you newbi-cheap thing..
The project satan stuff is not quite my bag of green tea.. but this sounds amazingly like what a lot of young kids were doing in the period 1982-1985. ...Hmm.. not quite though.. there would usually still be an odd guitar thrown in here and there.. and the inexpensive Korg vocoder was hotter than sinsemilla back then too.
Well done. Record more songs! We have some members here who are very into the VNV Nation stuff.. and this genre seems to be popular.. so I guess these songs do have an audience. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Thank you! This is what I wanted to hear .
I'm tired of all the "WOW This music is the best in the world!!!" kind of talk because it doesn't really help me improve my music creation skills.
Thanks guys! I'll go check out the other stuff people have posted and do whatever I can to throw in my 2 cents. |

good attitude about taking criticism. right on!
i don't really like this kind of music, but i think i can be constructive
it's frustrating to me, because the poetry sounds pretty direct, even naive and sweet in its emotion, but then the production sounds totally cleaved from the meaning of the words.
this music doesn't sound cold and dark to me. it sounds angry and sad. when i lost my mom to cancer two years ago, i made music with very sad words, and paradoxically, very idiotic, happy music. my goal was to make people feel the difference between joy and pain. i'm gonna post it now so you can hear.
nice to meet you. sorry to bring pain into the discussion, but your music evokes it. |

Pain is of course a very valid approach to a lot of subjects and it can be played in many ways.
Hmm.. Peter hammill has this very interesting and amusing song called "Betrayed". That one is pretty smart.. http://www.sofasound.com/phcds/overllyrics.htm#6
Too bad only the lyrics are online.. the song is just excellent.. he is kinda taking it past the point of no return and then some.. toungue in cheek..
Exploring disappointment and rejection to a point you can even smile about the thing. The song contains one excellent violin part that goes..well.. way into the area of excessive emotion. Recommended. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

The song Confession was written when a friends mother died of cancer a few months ago. So you're right on target. |

sorry to hear that. how's your friend? i bet its an honor to have music composed for them, but that kind of thing gets tricky and very emotional. I was in a band in 98, when our bass player suddenly died. he was 19, and it was very unforseen. every one of us wrote our own song for him. one of thse songs might even become famous shortly... hard to tell how the family feels about that- probably just compassion for my friend who wrote it. |
