A lighter one after the guitar-factory thread, but it belongs here: the Otamatone is a ribbon-controlled monophonic electronic instrument with a pressure-articulated "mouth" filter, it has been in continuous production since 2009, and the Deluxe version with a proper line-out is far cheaper and easier to find on the Japanese domestic market than anywhere else. Treated as a controller rather than a toy it is more useful than it has any right to be.

What it actually is.

Designed by Maywa Denki - the Tosa brothers' art unit that presents itself as a small-appliance factory and builds "nonsense machines" - and manufactured by the toy company Cube. Standard model: an eighth-note-shaped body about 27 cm tall, a ribbon along the stem for pitch (finger position = pitch, so glides and vibrato are free), and a silicone head you squeeze to open the mouth, which works like a crude formant/wah filter on the voice. Battery powered (AAA cells on the Standard), so none of the 100 V mains questions from the earlier threads apply. It is a toy in build quality and an instrument in behaviour: continuous pitch, no quantisation, expressive filter under your other hand.

The models that matter for this forum:

- Deluxe (about 44 cm): the one to buy if you want it in a patch. The Japanese listings spell out the two things that make the difference - a LINE OUT jack and a three-position Low/Mid/Hi range switch. Bigger ribbon, so intonation is far easier.
- Neo: the 10th-anniversary revision of the Standard size, easier to play and links to the OTM Link smartphone app.
- Techno: the app-linked model built around the OTM Link standard, meant for changing the voice from the phone. Same size class as the Standard.
- Standard / Colors / Sweets / character editions (Kirby, Hatsune Miku, Pac-Man, the kabuki-face "JAPAN" version): the same instrument in different clothes, headphone-level output only.
- Melody: preset tunes, a push-button toy, not an instrument.
- Capsule (gashapon) minis: they make a noise, that is all.

What the domestic market is asking today (read 17 September 2026; Mercari Japan and Rakuma are private sellers, Amazon Japan is new stock):

Standard:
- used, "used once then left in a drawer", Mercari - 2,000 yen (US$13.80)
- purple, seller says it does not play (parts/repair) - 800 yen (US$5.52)
- new white, Amazon Japan - 2,400 yen (US$16.56)

Deluxe (the line-out one):
- black, used, Mercari - 4,500 yen (US$31.05)
- black, sealed, Mercari - 7,800 yen (US$53.82)
- black, new, Amazon Japan - 5,836 yen (US$40.27)

Techno:
- black, used with box and manual, Mercari - 6,000 yen (US$41.40)
- white, new unused, Mercari - 8,000 yen (US$55.20)
- black, new, Amazon Japan - 7,655 yen (US$52.82)

Neo:
- black, used, Mercari - 3,500 yen (US$24.15)
- white, new, Amazon Japan - 3,400 yen (US$23.46)

The costume editions, for the record: Kirby Standard used 3,000 yen (US$20.70); Deluxe Hatsune Miku version, display-only condition, 11,000 yen (US$75.90); kabuki-face JAPAN version, new, 4,400 yen (US$30.36); Melody (the preset-tune toy) 1,492 yen (US$10.29) new on Amazon Japan; a Capsule 3 mini 650 yen (US$4.49) on Rakuma. And because this is that kind of forum: someone is selling a genuine Maywa Denki women's factory uniform, bought from the company shop, for 25,900 yen (US$178.71).

Two reads from that list. First, the used-to-new gap on a Deluxe is small (4,500 used vs 5,836 new), so buy new unless a seller is dumping one. Second, a "Techno" at 6,000 used undercuts the Amazon price by a good margin and it is the model with the most going on electronically, so that is the used one worth watching. The 800 yen purple Standard is honest about being dead - it is a ribbon-and-filter donor for a circuit-bending project, nothing more.

Getting it to the US.

Quoted tonight to a Los Angeles zip through the forwarder I use: a Standard or Techno in its retail box (28 x 10 x 6 cm, billed at about 0.35 kg) is US$17.44 economy air (10-20 days) or US$31.59 DHL (3-7 days). A Deluxe box (46 cm long, billed at about 0.8 kg) is US$20.99 economy or US$31.59 DHL. Three of them consolidated in one carton (46 x 30 x 10 cm, about 2.8 kg billable) is US$33.28 economy or US$48.61 DHL, so the group-buy maths works. Japan Post is not offered on the US lane at all right now. Duties: the US de minimis exemption was revoked in August 2025, so budget for duty on top regardless of value.

Disclosure: I buy and forward through OneMall, a Japan proxy service. The model-by-model write-up (with the Japan-only colourways) is here; this is the search I keep open for the Deluxe. One buyer's notes, not neutral advice.

If anyone has run a Deluxe line-out into a filter bank or a pitch-to-CV converter I would like to hear how well it tracks - the ribbon is continuous, which should make it a decent controller with the right converter.
