I just got a 3GS |
 |
|
Yesterday I got a new 3Gs. I upgraded from a 1st generation iPhone. The first impression is surprise that it is so little different than the 1G phone. It works exactly like it. Of course, it has GPS and the better 3 mega pix camera with movies and a compass.
The biggest thing for me is the 3G which I find to be much better than Edge. I can actually drive around and listen to electro-music.com radio, and other internet stations, in my car. Yesterday, I had several errands to run and I could listen to the SS09 live streaming concert. That was great.
The phone is much faster and a big surprise is that that speaker is much louder and cleaner and the WiFi transceiver is much more sensitive. What used to be just on the fringe at my home WiFi is now completely solid.
The battery life is said to be better than the 3G but I haven't had my phone long enough to get a feel for that. I could believe it because it takes a lot longer to charge than the 1G iPhone.
Anyway, this isn't really an official review, just some first impressions. _________________ --Howard

So have I...
Sadly I can't get any of the osc related apps to function for more than a few minutes without having to mess around with the wifi settings... |

In my experience my iphone (3G not 3GS) has the best hook-up to my home wifi. My desktop (XP Pro), Laptop (XP Home) and PS3 have occasionaly drop outs, claiming that the WIFI has mysteriously disappeared but the iphone remains constantly connected.
In fact I managed to connect to my router through the iphone once despite the fact that nothing else in the house would as I had changed a setting to something I shouldn't have. Thanks to the iphone I managed to repair it.
I think there may be some bugs in the new v3.0 OS but i haven't noticed any so far with regards to the WIFI. _________________ iP (Ross)

At home my WiFi works great with the new iPhone, but over here at a friends house I'm having some real problems. I suspect there is a bug with the new 3.0 OS software. _________________ --Howard

I've got the 3G phone with version 3.0 software, and have found it to be rather buggy until I did a hard reset. Now it seems to be working a lot better (the battery would only charge to half way, and the spotlight function was bringing up the wrong items- a bit like the Nutramatix Drinks machine that delivers a cup of liquid not quite entirely unlike tea )
I'm a bit miffed that the eq function still doesn't provide a user definable graphic equaliser type setting (ala Palm) and there is still a bug in the Calendar app that doesn't allow me to edit the category after saving an event. Better write to Stevie??
Apart from that, it's still a great phone- Jasuto and NLog continue to blow me away! _________________ ACHTUNG!

thanks for your replies, and let's hope for the better (I'll try to get a replacement this week end, still...) !
The iphone's interface is amazing, would it be larger and running os x, I'd be all smiles for a very long time... |

Please let us know what happens if you get a replacement phone. There is a lot of stuff on the internet about 3G iPhones not working well on WiFi. Mine works very well here at my house, but I went to a friend's and his WiFi didn't work at all well with the new iPhone. My laptop worked well, his laptops work well, but the iPhone was a complete dud on his WiFi.
Based on this topic and what I've read on the internet, it looks like the 3G iPhones don't "just work"! _________________ --Howard

hello to everyone,
I received the new iphone today, and it has the same wifi issues...The serial number is quite close (whatever that may mean)...Will I cope with this ? Apple shouldn't for sure, therefore I'll keep asking for a replacement until I get one that can steadily connect to a local network or Apple releases the redeeming os |

Yikes, I'm sorry to hear this.
I read a bunch of stuff on the internet about WiFi problems. Doesn't seem to be new to this 3GS, but the 3G has problems sometimes too. Check your WiFi router and make sure if there is a setting that enables 802-11b. The iPhone works only on b or g - not n. Also, it only works on 2.4 GHz, not on 5 GHz.
Other people are having similar problems.

Hello, great news ! It works now ! There seems to be a conflict between 3G and wifi, but this can be overcome by playing around with the 3G on/off switch !
I can now send osc messages to drscheme (but still haven't found the right iphone app : oscremote doesn't work under os 3.0, and it's the only one supporting multitouch (with finger indexing) xy control...If anyone has a suggestion...?) |

I was on the Apple forums reading really similar stories, in fact I also had some teething problems too, but I've turned off everything that Apple have turned on to show off like push and so on, and done a couple of hard resets, which seems to have fixed it. Interestingly, I had to do another hard reset yesterday after I lost my 3G signal altogether!
I've put it down to the limited memory on the 3G, and how the new OS is settling in. Dunno could just be apple voodoo- like repairing permissions! _________________ ACHTUNG!

I know this is off topic, but I wondered what audio apps you are running using drscheme, what libraries under drscheme to use it for audio, etc. My grad students and I were using drscheme in a programming languages class last semester, and I'd be interested in audio applications of the language.
I got a free ipod touch with the macbook that i bought my daughter for grad school last week, but my son immediately "borrowed" it, so i still haven't gotten around to trying one of these devices out. _________________ When the stream is deep

I don't use any external libraries (that's part of the game), but I'm extremely gratefull for this scheme code published by Ritchie Smith :
http://schemecookbook.org/Cookbook/CreatingAiffs
I'd never have succeeded in getting those iff chunks right It can be very easily modified (multichannel files, arbitrary sample-rate/bit depth). |

You're welcome !
here's some code allowing to receive osc messages in drscheme :
| Code: | #lang scheme
(require scheme/udp)
(define udp-socket (udp-open-socket #f #f))
(udp-bind! udp-socket "your-wifi-ip" 1333)
(define osc-bundle (make-bytes 128)) ;the length of an osc message is variable...you'll also need to define an 'unpacking' function.
(define udp-server
(lambda () (begin (udp-receive! udp-socket osc-bundle)
(display osc-bundle) ;and put there the function handling the osc data.
(display "\n")
(udp-server))))
(define osc-stream-thread (thread (lambda () (udp-server)))) |
