So, last night I installed the Windows 7 Beta Release onto a laptop that's been sort of 'between OSs' after a change of heart re: running a linux box. The Windows 7 Beta was a nice opportunity because
a) it's free
b) it's supposedly faster than Vista (more on that in a minute)
c) i read a particular review online by someone had done a clean Windows 7 install on a HP 6700-series just like my own: he said it was a breeze.. basically everything worked.. sound, quick-key thingies above the keyboard, the webcam, etc.

After fucking around with TinyXP and another bootleg XP release that was totally incapable of recognizing the presence of my wireless device, or my MEDIA device [read: sound card (it insisted on captializing the phrase MEDIA at all times)], the beta has been great. 7 is indeed much faster than Vista, at least on the laptop this thread concerns.

Got my web connection up, installed miniaudicle.

.,-=> EDIT: a reboot solved the following problem. Everything now is running fine.

*** I was able to generate sound with a few patches, but would get the following error message (If I had curly.ck open and 'Add(ed the) Shred'):

[curly.ck]: no such file or directory

however, if I saved it elsewhere (in my main miniaudicle directory) as something else, it would shred the shit like nobody's business. Any possible ideas as to what's going on here? ***

I was excited and relieved to see
a) ChucK (miniaudicle) runs in Windows 7
b) I can Chuck with great mobility! Free live entertainment at Slavebucks?

Thoughts, anyone?

I shouldn't say this, but I will. I know the source of the problems. You are running Microsoft software.

haha, little joke there. No joke really though.

...because as we all know both OSX and Linux are completely perfect and nobody ever had a problem with either. Oh, and ChucK runs on BSD as well these days, BSD is perfect as well</sarcasm>.

ChucK should simply run on any desktop version of Windows released in this century, I feel. If it doesn't we should pinpoint the exact issue as precisely as possible and hand it on to the DEV's to deal with.

After that works we can go into the relative virtues of different OS's, their features, limitations, interfaces bugs, for all I care politics, but it should still work. I'm not especially fond of MS either, but I don't think this perspective of "it's MS, of course it doesn't work" will do us much good, especially not as not everybody has choice about what OS to run all the time.

Regardless of how you or me feel about the more recent versions of Windows I think it's commendable that Telstar took the time to test this and I find these results quite interesting. Because of factors like jobs, games, various commercial programs, some hardware that is only supported by Windows, etc, some people need to run Windows, Vista is spectacularly unpopular and XP is running out so to me it's good to know that the MA works on Windows7; I think Telstar did a great job here. I know you were mostly joking but I still wanted to address this; Windows is the world's most popular OS; support for it matters.

I continue to notice how much faster Windows 7 loads plugins, etc. (I find loading certain Pluggo VSTs is a good real-world benchmark in lieu of any actual data.

It's a relief.. Vista was running terribly on my HP notebook off the shelf. They no longer give you an install disc whenyou buy PCs anymore, so you're left to try to dissect out all the bog slowing your machine down. Some of it is obvious, other stuff made me wary just to delete. Anyway, just glad to have a portable box de la musique!

That's ok, I wasn't upset but I'm the section editor here and I think it's my responsibility to make sure there's a environment that people feel good in so they will post findings like this.

Regardless of how sceptical you or me are about Windows7, this is a important test result. I don't mean to plead against debating the relative suitability of various OS's (or text editors, or sound cards or...) for ChucKing at all, BTW. We all try to make a informed choice there, debate can be very constructive. I respect your opinion, I just wanted to make clear that I didn't feel this was the right place and way to express it as it could be taken as being discouraging to Telstar's efforts. It's my responsibility to make sure people feel encouraged here to take such tests as tests like this are fundamental to ChucK's development. Agreed?

Telstar, did you mean that you needed a extra reboot after installing W7 before the MA would work or do you need a reboot after installing the MA? If it's the second case we may need a note about this in the install instructions for the MA on Windows, in the first case I'm not that bothered by it, Windows always seems to need a extra reboot or two after installation before it's set up properly.

Oh, I'd say that's *more* relevant, even. Benchmarks can be no substitute for how well it works in actual practice.

Just remembered a major factor I overlooked/forgot:

I did some additional testing after I realized I had set 'Compatibility Mode' to Windows XP Service Pack 2. I thought that may have been the solution, but then after trying:

Compatibility Mode XP SP2 w/ 'run as administrator'
Compatibility Mode XP SP2 w/o 'run as administrator'
No Compatibility Mode w/ 'run as administrator'
No Compatibility Mode w/o 'run as administrator'

The issue concerns only one's needing to 'Run as Administrator'
It may have something to do with OSC security, perhaps? Intentional or not? Total guesses. Thanks for the responses, all. Just thought I could contribute what I could to the ChucKommunity in lieu of real expertise!

Sure, agreed Kassen. I did not intend it to be critical of anyone, just a little joke that I say to friends sometimes.
