Verrrrrrry interesting...
I did notice him at the AH Nor Cal show a few months back. I'm assuming he's made good with everyone who ordered VCQFG boards / etc. from him, right?
I did notice that he said these are different from "my boards," so I hope that doesn't morph into something more.
Just have to wait and see, unless there is some other agreement between he and Mosc.

But, strange. Randal hasn't been back since this strange re-appearance. Perhaps he had a momentary lapse in taking his medication? (or a PM from Mosc??) |

It's probably a good thing (cos i thought that they were a bunch of ignorant c***s). It was a technician's job, and I got blamed for the CEO's shortcomings (ie he is incompetent). It seems that this is normal practice so these arseholes can buy more time when they have been the leader of that company for 1.5 years and still have no product to sell/ show to the shareholders (which was the case).

HE contacted me today via PM. it has been a longer PM, but he tried to be helpful. his comments on the quantizer and my questions about this project seem not to be a google-copy-paste-thing.
i wonder what his plan was - if he had a plan...
i did not answer him yet, and i am not quite sure how to communicate his answers in the quantizer thread. i will have think about it. _________________

I've got a good idea his request had something to do with this:
http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/topic-4619-0-0.html
Classic Randal:
| Quote: | | Yes, I agree. But I think we may see a significant resurgence in Frac. Tom's BugBrand's modular has had a huge influence on what I'm doing. Hi modules are shallow, designed for manufacturing, and compelling both visually and in function! Seeing his two trays bolted to a sheet of acrylic last January was a defining moment for me. It was frac which looked like euro! And I believe the future of Frac will grow ever more heavily towards banana's. So supporting Tom is a no-brainer. And John Blacet has done so much over the years for synths it would be unkind not to address the needs of his legacy modules! I even have hopes that PAIA will find its feet again after the loss if its leader... |
I think both Blacet and Bugbrand each provide racks and power supplies for their respective systems as part of their business model, so I'm not sure what he means by "supporting" them or it being "unkind" to ignore their products. The Bugbrand modular, in particular, is barely out of the starting gate. Maybe I'm missing something that would make it advantageous to them - it's hard to read the thread. Too many memories.
I can't help but notice a lot of these guys participating in the thread have already had a go round with Plan B. You'd think that experience would have honed their spidey sense somewhat. _________________ My Site |

OTOH he seems to have worked out the cabinets, at least. but maybe it will end up like the distressing PCB sale for thomas henries circuit!?

I too am very curious about how this goes.. Again he is full of 'helpful' tips all over the place and has MASSIVE plans.. How it develops is going to be really interesting.
First contact I had with him this time around was to kind of warn him that he should be very aware not to repeat the EM fiasco (which I really only saw the direct results of - I didn't, obviously, receive all the messages/phones that you guys did at that time).
At that point he said, basically - worry not, I have learned from that and will be selling via Analogue Haven.
Since then, though, it certainly has changed to direct buy (at least in part)
Thing is he does have at least some parts moving forwards in really interesting ways - the ideas for the cases DO sound pretty amazing and the case picture he posted recently looks, quite frankly, amazing. This is tempered somewhat by the fact that still he has been promising so many things, often with words like 'tomorrow' & 'next week' and still things take longer -- I know only too well that delays DO happen, but I guess one large problem in the EM fiasco was how he handled those delays (ie he was sh*t)
I actually am very keen for this to work out - the products he's design should be very, very welcome in the modular world. Interesting and varied designs with good prices - everything appears quite scalable too so you can get one case, or a larger one etc and also get PSU & buss or just plain for your own DIY.
For me, IF (& when) this does begin moving, I'd actually be very happy not to have to work on cases myself. While I find it interesting to explore that part of manufacturing I also have found it quite a headache and it takes away from other work.
I do certainly get the point you guys are making and the PlanB comment is quite pertinent (that issue is f-ing dreadful too). However, for the moment I am keeping a relatively open mind (though, of course, with memories in!) _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

Yep, he's seemed to have worked out some interesting rails, cabinets etc, which may be a vocation more up his alley. His knowledge on machining that kind of stuff strikes my untrained mind as something more than googular. I sure as hell couldn't do that kind of stuff even if I had the tools to do it with. The electronic ideas/advice he posts are cut and pasted nearly word-for-word from things I've read elsewhere, so Google is still his friend, and I wouldn't hold my breath on any of his electronic offerings.
The grand scale of things is the key. But, then again, thanks to the Plan B fiasco, forever has a new scale itself, so he may end up smelling like a rose, if not an atypically manic one at that. And one would probably expect to wait much longer for a cabinet like that than a simple PCB. _________________ My Site |

Well, I hate to say it, but this again sounds like over promising and under delivering. I've read his descriptions of the cases he's proposing and personally they sound like a fairly complex bit of design. Yes, you can theoretically design a case that would accomodate both Frac and Euro modules, but it quickly becomes complicated by things like the plethora of different panels widths and mounting hole locations (especially amongst Euro equipment). On top of that, he's proposing to make it a simple bolt together solution, and it's expandable, and it folds, and he's got a perfect power supply / distro solution, and and and and. Believe me, I design mechanical stuff for a living. It's not that simple.
On top of that, his latest message states that there's a delay because one of his machine tools broke. First off, that sounds like a handy excuse. But even if this is the truth (and stuff like that DOES happen... we've all been there), I think it's a huge mistake trying to sell mechanical components if you're doing even part of the work yourself. It's very time consuming, and you really want to farm this out to a place that is set up to do this stuff quickly. This would be like me trying to sell PCBs, and making them by hand etching and drilling each one. The downside is that you have to order larger quantities, but that's the ONLY way to keep the quality up and the price down.
I don't wish the guy any ill will and I hope I'm wrong about all this, but like I said, I design stuff like this for a living and it just sounds like too much too soon. This is a very ambitious project, and I don't see it happening without some really good mechanical engineering and a major investment in components. Time will tell, but this is all sounding way too familiar...
