Of feedback systems |
 |
|
Hi all,
I'm newbie with ChucK, just wrote my first prog. I'm interested of feedback systems, ie. from dac back to controlling arbitrary parameter(s) in the input. Any suggestions, ideas ? I'm also looking a way to produce linearly growing series, for crescendi, glissandi etc. Thanks, I'm very glad I find this group, spent last night reading old topics and enjoyed (and hopefully learned) a lot !

Feedback is awesome and sometimes unpredictable and dangerous (at least aurally). It's great for having your pieces grow on their own, you can set initial parameters and some kind of feedback loop with minor deviations and have a piece go on changing forever.
I'm hardly an expert on ChucK but creating series linear or otherwise seems pretty easy to accomplish using some Math and a For loop. There is probably an easier way; crescendi and glissandi seem standard enough that ChucK must have them implemented in some way. I would guess you could manipulate some of the envelope functions to do what you want. |

Thanks Underwaterbob, yes feedback systems are interesting, and can be aurally dangerous too, I hope I find some method(s) to normalize the output until I feed it back to input.
I'm looking other ways than For loop to linear series, envelope or perhaps Gen functions, or something similar.
btw. not sure if my answer to your question is correct, I've used Std.mtof function for MIDI notes, like
| Code: |
60 => Std.mtof => f.freq;
|
for middle C or
| Code: |
Std.rand2(60,88) => Std.mtof => f.freq;
|
to generate random MIDI notes between 60 and 88.
Thanks !

i also enjoy playing around with feedback.
using the .last() value of a UGen can help you start experimenting with feedback.
many things can be done by ChucKing also, for example:
| Code: | SinOsc s => dac;
s => Gain s_feedback => s;
2 => s.sync // now the signal fed into s will do FM with s |
now, after this, you can try adjusting:
s.freq, s.phase, s_feedback.gain to see Self-Frequency-Modulating sine wave oscillator
s_feedback.gain is the FM depth or index.
more complex system can be done with using .last(), for example..
| Code: | SinOsc s => dac;
while(true)
{
s.freq() + s.last() => s.freq;
Std.rand2f(1, 10)::samp => now;
} |
especially, if you have more and more UGens to play with,
you can easily build something chaotic or with some new particular sound easily.
but it just takes time finding many many ways to do it.
that's why we have coffee and we still don't sleep until 6-7am -_-"
oh that's not good for health though.
beer is more healthy, because it'll make you go to bed early and feel much better in the morning! |

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks kijjaz, I will experiment with these.
Any thoughts for linear series, like envelopes or similar ?
Oh yes, coffee, a lot of coffee !
Thanks !

Oh, how I wish that were true!
By the way, Jukka, a tip when posting chuck code is to turn off html (it's a checkbox below the message text field) and use the code tag (a button above the text). That way you won't have chuck code transforming into cool smilies and other things. Good luck with the feedback!

Not if you have big cans of strong beer (ahum). _________________ Kassen |

Yes, I noticed the code tags and quotes as well, thanks Stefan !

THAT is the understatement of the year - kijjaz is the kung-fu master of ChucK feedback!
My favorite feedback thingie is the demonic vocoder, a one-liner that I created:
| Code: | // Demonic Vocoder
adc => PitShift p => dac; adc.gain(10); 1 => p.mix; p.shift (0.8); day => now; |
It works by down-shifting your voice by 20%, sending that out to the speakers which then feedback to the microphone, downshifting again by 20% and so on, creating multiple images of your voice in frequency space. Makes you sound like a demon from the abyss if you set the volume correctly. Muhuhaha! _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz |
