Subject description: A fun ChucK program

I have written a very simple and really interesting program and attached it below for you to enjoy. It runs on all platforms since it does not use MAUI. The patch is a loop of four delay lines arranged as follows.

delayL receives adc.left and sends it to dac.left
delayR receives adc.right and sends it to dac.right
delayLR receives the output of delayL and sends it to the input of delayR
delayRL receives the output of delayR and sends it to the input of delayL

So the loop is sort of a criss-cross shape like this: |X| if you see what I mean by that. Also at the output left and right channels are a pair of SinOsc UGens set up with .sync equal to 1. This performs amplification of low volume signals and attenuation of high volume signals which warps the sound and acts like a compressor as well. I learned this little trick from kijjaz.

I have my Mac mini's audio routing set up with Soundflower, using the 16 channel interface to receive audio from both iTunes and Line-in (the program called Line-in, not the line-in jack), with iTunes playing uncopyrighted electro-music songs and Line-in capturing the microphone on my fancy wireless headset. Then the Soundflower 2 channel interface routes the audio from the Song Transmogrifier to Nicecast for broadcasting out to my electro-music radio port.

OK that sounds complicated. Well, it is. In addition to the audio routing complexity, there are volume controls all over the place so configuring everything for my radio shows can be quite frustrating. It is a good setup, though, because everything except the microphone itself and the listener's speakers/headphones is completely digital. This is better - for me - than using a mixer with effects and audio toys because the quality of the audio is preserved as much as possible.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I'm planning to use this program during my Spring Equinox concert performance which will be in about two weeks on electro-music radio. So tune in and have a listen - and enjoy the program.

Les
